Great Depression 2008 and 2009 Job Losses
Most economists attribute the start of the recession to December 2007. From there, job loss totals for 2008 and 2009 show how the economy spiraled downward, as hundreds of thousands of people became unemployed each month.

January 2008: 76,000 jobs lost
February 2008: 76,000 jobs lost
March 2008: 80,000 jobs lost
April 2008: 20,000 jobs lost
May 2008: 62,000 jobs lost
June 2008: 62,000 jobs lost
July 2008: 51,000 jobs lost
August 2008: 84,000 jobs lost
September 2008: 284,000 jobs lost
October 2008: 240,000 jobs lost
November 2008: 533,000 jobs lost
December 2008: 524,000 jobs lost
Job Losses By Month 2009:
January 2009: 650,000 jobs lost (including 64,500 on Bloody Monday)
February 2009: 651,000 jobs lost
March 2009: 663,000 jobs lost
April 2009: 539,000 jobs lost
May 2009: 345,000 jobs lost
June 2009: 467,000 jobs lost
July 2009: 247,000 jobs lost
August 2009: 216,000 jobs lost
September 2009: 263,000 jobs lost
October 2009: 190,000 jobs lost
November 2009: 11,000 jobs lost
December 2009: 85,000 jobs lost
By the time all was said and done, more than 2 million jobs were lost in the Great Depression of 2008, and more than 4.3 million jobs were lost in the Great Depression of 2009.
